Met Police Training Centre Potential Makeover Pending
Friday, 10 May 2013
MOPAC has submitted proposals to revitalize the current Met Police training centre in Colindale.
The Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime intend to replace the outdated Peel Centre in Aerodrome Road with a downsized, state-of-the art facility if Barnet Borough Council gives the go-ahead.
The new training and operational space will leave a 73 acre site open for further development, such as new housing, shops and potentially a primary school.
Originally built in the 1930s, the structure has remained the main training point for police officers serving Greater London for around 80 years.
Jane Bond, director of property services for the Metropolitan Police, said:
"Our Hendon Training Centre has a reputation as one of the world's leading police training facilities, with a long proud history. If planning permission is granted, our proposals will enable us to provide suitable training facilities for future generations of police officers."
Chief Superintendent Adrian Usher, the Barnet Borough Commander has already welcomed the proposal that could save up to £6million a year:
"This is a key milestone for the Metropolitan Police Service as the Peel Centre is a much-treasured site and these proposals will ensure it remains at the forefront of modern policing."
